My Little M&Ms

mnmsLike any mom, I’ve got a million nicknames for my kiddos. Some crop up more often than others – like Noah’s “Animal” nickname. Some were from birth – like Emma’s “Froggy” nickname. And others are based on personality traits – like Makenna’s “Silly Girl” nickname. Still others are embarrassing and will be saved for the future. =)

And recently I’ve gotten a lot of questions about where my references to “M&Ms” has come from. So I’ll explain:

Makenna = M

Noah = N

Emma = Em

Or M, N, Em.

My little MNEms. And no. We actually didn’t plan this. =) But I love that it turned out this way. I think nicknames are a fun way of communicating love for our children and our interpretation of their personalities (certainly, though, nicknames can be used in hurtful ways). I remember nicknames my family had for me growing up and the memories attached to these names are precious to me. I hope our children will one day say the same about their nicknames.

What nicknames do you have for your kiddos?

  1. We say Jonty Boy or J Bomb, Trentstar, Toebs, Immy, (most common), Im, Missy, Immsy Whimsy, Immy Immy Jen Jen, (Imogen Jennifer) and poor Jayden just gets his real name, failing that he gets called Toby.

  2. Oh, I forgot to say, I had wondered about M&M, and it’s very clever and ultra cute!

  3. I purposefully named Ethan a short name that could not be “nick named.” However, his Aunt has called him E.T. since birth (his initials) due to his alien look as a new born. Oh well. You can’t win them all.

  4. Sabrina says:

    Of course, we have our M&Ms, as you know. But Haddi Ruth’s nickname is Boo. Her daddy used to tell her how beautiful she was (is), and he shortened it to Boofer, and then Boo. Levi is BB, which came from a cousin calling him ‘Bebi’, and then we shortened it to BB. It’s so fitting because he canNOT be still. Kati & Eli are nicknames, but their others are Sissy & Cubby. Sissy, being obvious, and Cubby because we called Eli man cub because he looked like Mogli from Jungle Book. Man cub became cubby.

    It was neat to hear your story. Precious memories to share!
