He Reached Down Into My Darkness

My Redeemer’s Love. This song has been running through my head today like a train’s tracks running through the valley. It’s based on Romans 8:37-39, which says:

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This pretty much means nothing. No government. No enemy. No uncertain future. No distorted relationship. No suffering marriage. No culture war. No distant teen’s hatred. No life disappointment. No hope deferred. No hurt. No sin. No. Nothing.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God, if we are in Christ Jesus.

And that, my friends, is the best news. Though storms swirl and rage around us, we are safe. His love is deeper than all of this. It is everlasting. Constant. Unchanging. True. Holy. Pure. It demands nothing at all except to respond.

When we do respond, chains of sin are broken. Grace is poured out. Forgiveness is extended. Lives are transformed, renewed. And the vast, dark chasm we thought we have enjoyed – however short or long a time – becomes the valley of life.

Perfection is not the resulting outcome. Oh no. Not yet. I am reminded of my many imperfections all day long – as I angrily face a toddler throwing yet another temper tantrum. But I am being conformed. Of that I am certain. Where there once was despair, there is now hope. And change! I am no longer who I was 10 years ago…5 years ago! Or yesterday, even.

No, I cannot remain where I am. It is an impossibility. To do so would fly at the face of a God Who gave up all for me – Who reached down into the miry pit and rescued me. No, I change. I want to change. I am changing. And it’s because of:

My Redeemer’s Love

My Redeemer’s love is deeper
Than the depths of sin and hell
He who was enthroned in glory
Came to bring us to Himself
My Redeemer’s love is wider
Than the breach my sins had made
He reached down into my darkness
He alone has pow’r to save

Deeper than the rolling seas
Higher than the mountain peaks
Your love is all I need

My Redeemer’s love is stronger
Than my fiercest enemies
He will hold me in the tempest
Through the flood He carries me
My Redeemer’s love will lead me
Through the deepest valley here
He will shepherd me and guide me
He will ever keep me near

Deeper than the rolling seas
Higher than the mountain peaks
Your love is all I need
Stronger than the rushing wind
Shattering the power of sin
Your love is all I need From Age to Age cover art

My Redeemer’s love grows sweeter
As eternity draws near
I’ll enjoy His love forever
At His throne for endless years
My Redeemer’s love will fill me
On the day I see His face
I will love Him back forever
And forever sing His praise
