Blendtec vs. Vitamix – which is better?

origin_5076332818Lately I’ve been trying to decide something very important. Earth-shattering, really. I mean, like the scientists in their laboratories will be amazed. I just can’t help it, though. I have been trying to decide between:

a Blendtec and a Vitamix

I know. You all are impressed, as well. Kidding. Seriously. And honestly, it’s not that I have a ton of cash lying around to run out and get one! (So anyone planning to break in tonight, think again.)

But I’m saving my pennies and hope to get my new baby soon. Before I do, I have to figure out which one is better.

My mama recently loaned me her Blendtec. And I love it. I have used it several times a day, every day. I’ve made smoothies and frappes and larabars and all kinds of stuff!

Aside from these and the babyfood, dressings, daquiris and other liquid-y items these babies blend up, I have heard you can also make:

  • soup
  • scrambled eggs
  • grind grains
  • make breads (batters, doughs, etc.)
  • exfoliating masks
  • doggie treats

What?? That’s pretty impressive! And something my lil’ ol’ KitchenAid blender can only dream of accomplishing for me!

So it’s between these two:

Blendtec & SpoonBut now for my questions.

  • Am I missing out on the Vitamix?
  • Is the Vitamix quieter? Is the tamper really helpful? (Recently I stuck a wooden spoon too far down in my mama’s Blendtec – oops!!)
  • Is the Blendtec worth the extra money for the extra pitcher?
  • How often do you use it? I mean, like after the honeymoon is over and the kids are all screaming and you’re running late to get out the door and your beautiful baby is sitting on the counter…or under a cabinet. Lay it on me.
  • What are your fave recipes? Have you ever made doggie biscuits? Cause if you have, I’m intrigued and a little grossed out. =)

So I need to hear from all you Vitamix/Blendtec people. And if any of you are so lucky as to have one of each…well, let’s just say you need to leave a comment for sure!

  1. I LOVE my blendtec!!! I did quite a bit of research before I got it as well. Family members have a vitamix, so I had a bit of experience with one. It’s what I was planning on getting until someone told me to check out blendtec before I made my decision. I love my Blendtec WAY more! From my research, I found the blendtec to be cheaper (looks like you found differently). I got mine from Costco online when they had a $30 rebate. I love that I can blend grains in my blendtec! You have to buy a separate jar for the vitamix to blend grains. I love the pre-set buttons on the blendtec cause then I know my recipe will turn out the same way each time, cause it changes speeds on it’s own. Another critical point for me was that the blendtec is much shorter…the vitamix does NOT fit under most cabinets while one the counter with the jar on the base. Blentec also offers a new jar called the “twister” jar (which yes is sold separately :( but is really awesome!) It has long scraper sides for when you want to make really thick things like peanut butter, almond butter, hummus, or I’ve used it for making frozen bananas into ice cream too ;) You turn the top as the blender is running and it scrapes the sides and helps mix everything together. Here is a link to a helpful comparison of the two blenders that is very honest depending on what features are most important to you.

  2. Okay I forgot a few things after looking back at questions you asked :) I use my blendtec 1-3 times a day. Make a green smoothie every morning. The whole process from start to finish, including the cleaning, takes about 10 minutes. Cleaning is so easy! Another plus! You don’t have to take the blade apart at all. So all that needs to be cleaned, is the jar and the two pieces for the lid. After I pour our smoothies into glasses, I rinse out the remaining stuff left on the sides, put 1-2 cups of warm water and a dot of soap in the jar, put the lid back on, put the jar back on the base and hit “pulse” for about 3-5 seconds two times. Pour it out, rinse the soap off and let it dry!

I’ve used it to make flour before and it does it SO well! The blendtec comes with a book that has all kinds of information and recipes in it. In the book is a page all about how long and at what speeds to grind certain grains into flour. Very helpful.

One of my favorite things to make is homemade salad dressing. The blendtec is so powerful it “emulsifies” the dressing, mixing it into a great consistency and blending the ingredients well.

I have all three jars for the blendtec and I use ALL of them! The wildside is great because it is so big! I only have to do one batch of green smoothies for me and the hubby to each have a quart for the day. The smaller jar is what I usually use for dressings or grains or any time I only want a smaller portion of something. In order for it to blend correctly, there has to be enough ingredients in the jar, so the smaller size is great to have as well. And then the twister I probably use the least, but it is so great for those thick recipes that it is well worth having!

Okay, clearly I’m in favor of the Blendtec :) hope some of that was helpful!

Very VERY helpful review, Joy! And I love that you have experience with both! Thank you thank you thank you! :)

  3. I’m a Vitamix fan, so I say you’re missing out! I have a reconditioned Vitamix 5200. The reconditioned models are a bit less to purchase.

The Vitamix is quite powerful, so I wouldn’t call it quiet, but it’s not too loud. My 1-year-old doesn’t mind the noise, especially since she knows in just a few seconds, something delicious will be coming out of the blender.

The tamper can be helpful for processing thick ingredients, such as almond butter or ice cream. Other than that, I don’t use the tamper too often.

I use my Vitamix at least once a day–sometimes more. I make a protein shake each morning, sometimes use it for sauces for dinner or to blend ingredients up for veggie burgers or even pancakes, and use it often for ice cream or sorbet for dessert.

Vitamix does offer lower profile containers, which fit under kitchen cabinets. Clean up is as simple as a drop of soap and water, run the machine for about 30 seconds, then rinse.

    Good luck deciding!

  5. Jennifer,

Awesome post! I have saved so much money with my Vitamix. It is a little bit of an investment, but it does pay for itself if you use it alot like me. I make all my soups, sauces, smoothies and ice cream with it. I don’t even remember the last time I purchased all of that at the store lol. I have never tried the Blendtec but I have also heard great things about that one as well.

    Chris
