Make-ahead Christmas Breakfast – 10+ Recipes

My family grew up leisurely opening stockings on our parent’s bed and then enjoying a big breakfast before diving into the gifts. I love this. It makes the anticipation last longer, the excitement hangs around, and we have fun taking our time.

But squeezing a big breakfast into this can be a bit challenging! Growing up, my dad was the sausage, egg and bacon-maker. (My mom was the finish-up-things-for-Christmas-dinner-maker.) And, as my little (big) family has begun our own traditions, I want to be sure both the hubby and I get to be a part of the fun as much as possible, all while creating a memorable, scrumptious and healthy breakfast!

Most of these recipes can be prepared mostly, or totally!, ahead of time – how awesome is that??

(This recipe requires sourdough starter. You can either purchase some here, or you can easily make your own sourdough starter.)

  • 2 cups organic whole wheat flour
  • 1 t real salt
  • 3 farm fresh, pastured eggs
  • 1/4 cup organic butter
  • 1/2 cup starter
  • 1 cup raw milk
  • 1 t organic vanilla extract (see my recipe here)

Mix all ingredients in a ceramic or glass bowl (I use these) on Christmas Eve. Cover and stash in fridge till the morning. Heat up the waffle-maker (I use this one) and churn these bad boys out! Feel free to get a little Christmass-y and add some fun mix-ins – like fruit, nuts, organic chocolate chips, etc!

  1. […] Breakfast for dinner. One word: eggs. Our family of five (two adults, three 2 year olds) eats one pound of meat at dinner – easy. But I could use a dozen eggs in a frittata and save about half what I would have otherwise spent! Sourdough waffles are another cheap way to (occasionally) serve a fun, easy, pull-from-the-freezer meal that is also filling and healthy!
