Goat’s Milk Formula – Recipe and Tutorial

This goat's milk formula recipe is a follow-up to Angela's story - if you missed why she and her husband chose goat's milk formula for their twin boys, click here! When I make formula, I buy 8 gallons of goat’s milk at a time.  This makes me 16 gallons of formula!!  I quadrupled the recipe shown below and rewrote it so it’s for 1 gallon of milk and 1 gallon of water, instead of 4 cups each.  This makes it easier as I get my milk in gallons.  So here’s how I prep on my formula making days… I put the dry ingredients (nutritional yeast and powdered vitamin C) in 8 little glass cups for the 8 batches I’ll be making.       I use 8 mugs … [Read more...]

Goat’s Milk Formula – One Mother’s Solution for Twins

Goat’s milk formula??! What’s in it? Where will I find the milk? Raw milk??...are you sure that’s safe? What if the boys don’t like it? What if it upsets their tummies? How much will this cost? How on earth will I continually mix it up with all of those ingredients? It seems overwhelming already! These were just some of the thoughts I had as we began the process of transitioning to goat’s milk formula when my boys were four months old. Let me digress and share a little about our journey… A Need and A Solution: Goat's Milk Formula I planned on breastfeeding my twins until they were at least a year old. I knew it would be a challenge, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {Guiltless}

I hope this series has proven helpful to you as you consider options for feeding your little one! I'd love to hear what worked and what didn't work for you - leave a comment or contact me here.It was certainly a wild ride for us as we learned how to feed little babies well. And both my husband and I learned a lot in the process. Which brings me to the point of this post: We didn't do everything right. I know. You're shocked. (That was to be read with sarcasm, in case you missed it. =) But seriously. I don't claim to know it all or have done it all right. Part of what I share is out of regret from things I wish I had known or learned prior to this season. But I am learning (quickly!) that … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {Two Weeks of Food in Two Hours}

Hey, hey! Welcome back to our series on making real food for Baby. You can catch up on the previous posts in this series here: Bon appétit, bébé! Today I'll be sharing with you how you can make two weeks of baby food in only two hours. Yep. That's it. And I don't mean a "tablespoon-a-day's worth" like I've seen in other meal plans. I mean three hearty, generous meals a day for the next two weeks. Ready? The Method Behind the Madness Last week I shared that I went off a chart based on the foods "appropriate" for my babies' age group. I mainly did this because it helped me to think outside the box and not just serve them the same ol' same ol'. And then I checked which produce I wanted to … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {Favorite Products and Resources}

Welcome back! If you are just joining us, you can read the rest of the posts in this series here: Bon appétit, bébé! Today we’re going to talk about some of my absolute favorite things when it comes to feeding Baby (and some of the equipment you need may very well be in your kitchen cabinets already!). I’ve tried several different products and narrowed it down to the following, which fell into the “I can’t live without them” category. Making Baby Food During the season when I was making food for the babies, I quickly learned that purees weren’t always necessary and it oftentimes took me a step further in preparation. But I did enjoy making a few purees and for those I simply needed the … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {When Baby Says “No”}

Thanks for joining us for the next post in the Bon appétit, bébé! series! I love hearing all of your stories, comments and questions - keep them coming! Okay. You’ve smashed and smooshed the 'nana and ‘cado all up. You’ve got the hubby poised with the camera and one of the grandparents with the video camera, the others checking in via FaceTime. The bib is on, the high chair is still sparkly and your baby is looking up at all the excited faces wondering what is going on. You send a spoonful of the yummy stuff towards her mouth and…it ends up on the side of her face. [enter laughter from all present] You try again. Annnnnd it also lands everywhere but her mouth. Hm. Your baby … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {What to Feed Baby}

Welcome back! If you’d like to get caught up on the previous posts in this series, click here: Bon appétit, bébé! Today we’ll be discussing great starter foods for Baby. And next week? How to avoid picky-eating. There are lots of yummy foods you could feed your baby, right? And, whether you choose to make babyfood or not, it just makes sense that we want to offer the most nutrient-dense foods possible. We don’t want to waste empty calories to fill a tummy that may not be hungry the next time the breast (or bottle) is offered. These empty calories are found in cereals and sometimes in fruits and vegetables. The Alligator Pear A great first food is avocado (nicknamed the alligator … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {Myth Busters}

Welcome back to our series on feeding Baby! If you missed the other posts, you can click to read the “intro” and “how and when to feed baby.” If you're all caught on! =) The Munchies When thinking through how you’ll begin feeding your baby, you may want to take a look at which produce is the “dirtiest.” The EWG has an excellent list of items ranging from the dirtiest to the cleanest. (If you’re unfamiliar with why organic is often super important, you may want to read my recent post documenting how our food has become a literal science experiment of nastiness!) Once I knew what was in our food, I just couldn’t see how putting that into their bodies made any sense: chemicals, … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {How and When to Feed Baby}

In last week’s introduction to this series (Bon appétit, bébé!), I shared some of the questions I am most frequently asked with regards to feeding babies. So, I’ll begin by letting you in on the little journey I have been on for…oh, about 15 months now. Once upon a time, when the babies were two months old… I began dreaming of the day when their nourishment was not dependent entirely upon me. This was mainly due to the immense challenges I faced with breastfeeding all three babies and supply issues (you can read our journey on breastfeeding here). I read somewhere that babies often begin cereal at four months old so I figured I’d better get on this if I’m going to do it right! …Right? … [Read more...]

Bon appétit, bébé! {overview}

One of the topics I receive questions about most frequently (besides “are they natural?” =) has to do with how I made baby food for the babies. Now, I’ve only been feeding the triplets for about a year, but during that year I have made a lot of baby food. A lot. And, if you know me, I’ve done more than a little research on this region of parenting – nutritional aspects, cost analyses, time efficiency, product reviews, etc. So, I am happy to finally be able to share my efforts and experiences with you! Some of the most frequent questions I hear from you are: When did you first give solids to the babies and what did you give them? How did you decide what to give them? How did … [Read more...]
