When Fear Becomes Our Motivator – The Swinging Pendulum of Parenting

When you hear the word “Gatekeepers” what do you picture? I imagine a scene from the Wizard of Oz where all the monkeys are standing guard determined to keep out intruders. Yo-Ee-Yo-O-O-Oh...It’s scary and intimidating. A good thing when it comes to the evil that the Bible refers to as “crouching at the door,” (Genesis 4:7). But we mustn’t treat our children as if they are the evil ones when it may be that they are being tempted. And yet it is all too easy to respond this way when fear becomes our motivator. "What-Ifs" with Children ---> Fear Becomes Our Motivator Most of us are tempted to fear when we discover our children are being tempted to sin or have sinned. We imagine all … [Read more...]

How to Talk About Homosexuality with Christian Teens

Homosexuality. Did I get your attention? I'm sure I did and I'm sure you dread figuring out how to talk about homosexuality with your teens. Maybe you’re thinking, “If talking with my teen(s) about sex wasn't already hard enough, now I've got to add this to the conversation?” Yes, absolutely.  Even if your teen has been “sheltered” from public school exposure, it's almost impossible to protect them from the pro-homosexual advancement of our current cultural climate. Not just homosexuality, but sexuality in general isn't just tolerated anymore: it's celebrated. Everywhere you turn, teens are encouraged to explore their sexuality and discover who they are, what gender they'd like to … [Read more...]

What He Said…

Gay. Straight. Marriage. Hate crime. Tolerance. Intolerance. Wackos. Religious. Homosexual. Homophobe. These words are pretty much everyday words in mainstream media these days. Seems everyone has an opinion and few want to listen to those opposing their viewpoint. If you disagree, you must be intolerant. If you fall on the other side of the line - in a different camp - you must be made to accept my convictions. It seems fear is often at the base of the motivation of many who follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, who trust in Him for their salvation. But this ought not to be so! For this earth is just our temporary home! We are journeying through! We are guaranteed that the world will … [Read more...]

Guest Post on CCEF’s Blog

Last year I blogged about the "Sex Matters" conference CCEF wanted to host at Metro Life Church. It was a wonderful experience and we met, and enjoyed our time with, the whole team. I learned so much and am so grateful for the opportunities with which CCEF provides the Christian community to grow in knowledge and wisdom. David and I completed the first course through their online School of Biblical Counseling - and loved it! Then we had babies. So we're a bit busy right now, but we hope to begin taking courses again! Anyways, Barbara Lane recently saw a status update on my facebook page and asked me if I would be willing to turn it into a blog post for their blog. I said, "Sure!" So here it … [Read more...]

Porn, Sex, and Protection

The Christian blog scene is hopping with reviews of recent movies and books hitting the press. (Some of my favorite posts are listed below.) Before you sign off on this, bored, let me ask you a question. Does anyone in your house view pornography? Has anyone in your house ever viewed pornography? No? Sadly, I'll bet they have. The statistics say they probably have. Did you know: "90% of children between the ages of 8 and 16 have viewed porn online. The average child sees porn for the first time at age 11....The number one consumer of pornography is boys, ages 12-17...Statistically, you're probably too late." (Mark Driscoll, The Peasant Princess) A little shocked? So was I. If 10 … [Read more...]
